Crypto Nationwide Crackdown on Illegal Mining
On April 22, 2025, Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior declared cryptocurrency mining illegal, highlighting its violation of multiple national laws, including the Penal Code and regulations governing industrial activities and municipal use. This announcement follows a comprehensive investigation that uncovered over 1,000 unauthorized mining sites across the country.
The Ministry emphasized that these illicit operations not only contravene legal statutes but also jeopardize the nation’s power infrastructure. “Cryptocurrency mining leads to excessive consumption of electrical energy, which increases the load on the public grid and may lead to power outages affecting residential, commercial, and service areas,” the Ministry stated.
Crypto Energy Consumption and Infrastructure Strain
Investigations revealed that certain residential areas, notably in the Al-Wafra region, exhibited electricity consumption levels up to 20 times higher than average, indicative of mining activities. Such excessive energy use has led to power outages and threatens the stability of essential services.
